Is it Okay to be Thankful This Year?

November 26, 2024

I sit here thinking about Thanksgiving and the first thing that comes to me is, “Can it really be November already?” It’s been a year of changes for me and for our entire world.

In this time of division, destruction, and uncertainty in our world, is it okay to think about all the things I’m thankful for?

I am thankful for so much! In spite of division in our world I have a job where the people I work with are a team and while we may not all agree on everyChurch at Highland Park Staff issue, we work together and we have the best results. I have a family that laughs together, spends time together, and grows together; it’s a real place of safety.

In a time when there is destruction around the world, I am continuing to see families build beautiful lives together and people give of themselves to help others in need. It gives me great hope to see the way children are so loving and giving and it helps me know that the future of our world is in good hands.

In a world where we really don’t know what today holds, I see people around me planning for the future and rushing around to make the holidays perfect for their families. I see the anticipation on children’s faces as they think about all the things they want Santa to bring them. I see children feeling safe in the arms of parents, grandparents, siblings and friends.

Being thankful isn’t about life being perfect. Being thankful is about seeing the good around us in spite of the hard times.

Being thankful is recognizing the vastness of God’s love for us and how despite difficulties, we know we serve a God who is with us.

We’re not alone; every good and perfect thing comes from God. May we recognize ways to be thankful, not just today, but everyday of our lives.
