As I reflect on the theme of this Advent Season, the word senses brought up a lot of wonderful memories for me.
Having grown up at Highland Park, I have some favorite “sense related” memories directly related to this place and my community of faith. The Christmas Eve service, and all of Advent, has always been so special for me. I love seeing the beauty that adorns our sanctuary, and the glow of candles while singing Silent Night on Christmas Eve.
I loved playing and hearing the handbells on Christmas Eve. Who doesn’t love all the sounds of hymns and Christmas carols during this season? I love the touch from so many people that you see during the Christmas season. People that you may not be around a lot or see very often. Their hugs and touches mean so much.
Personally, I remember the smell of a real Christmas tree. (In my adult life, someone was always allergic in my family, so we never have one)
At Christmastime, I still love to participate in our “girls only” annual cookie exchange. There are so many varieties and tastes of Christmas cookies and festive drinks. What can I say, I guess I am still a kid at heart. I do love the spirit and traditions of Christmas.
I pray that each one of you will experience and remember your favorite senses during this advent season.
